Whiplash: Understanding the Injury and its Symptoms

Whiplash is a soft tissue injury that affects the neck, which is often caused by a sudden jerking motion of the head, such as in a car accident. It is also known as a neck sprain or strain.

At HealthyWays Integrated Wellness Solutions, we see whiplash patients nearly every week, and have years of experience helping to identify and correct their problems with focused chiropractic care.

Common Symptoms

Symptoms of whiplash go beyond just neck pain and can include:

  • Headaches
  • Fatigue
  • Shoulder pain
  • Anxiety and depression
  • Upper and lower back pain
  • Sleep disturbance
  • Impaired concentration

In some cases, less common symptoms such as blurred vision, ringing in the ears (tinnitus), irritability, and memory problems may also be experienced. It’s important to note that whiplash can occur from other types of trauma, not just car accidents, and can happen at relatively low speeds.

The risk of developing whiplash increases with age, particularly for older adults and those with current neck pain.

Ignoring symptoms can prolong recovery time and lead to muscle stiffness and weakness. Instead, it’s important to seek treatment as soon as possible which may include manipulative therapies and certified physiotherapy techniques to alleviate pain, improve range of motion, and reduce muscle stiffness and weakness.
